AlUla is Saudi Arabia’s most dramatic heritage destination - a 200-kilometre valley carved through the Hejaz mountains, dotted with Nabataean tombs, ancient inscriptions, and sandstone formations. The accommodation market has developed rapidly since 2019 and now spans everything from genuinely luxurious desert resorts to functional mid-range hotels in AlUla town.

The tradeoff in AlUla is consistent: the most spectacular properties are remote and expensive; the most practical and affordable are in or near town. This guide covers the full spectrum.

AlUla’s Accommodation Zones

AlUla Old Town area is the most practical base. The old city ruins, Dadan plateau, and local restaurants are within easy reach, and the drive to Hegra (the main archaeological site) takes approximately 15 minutes. Several mid-range hotels are in this zone.

Hegra / Mada’in Salih area is more isolated - some 20 km north of AlUla town. Luxury camps and one resort property position themselves near the Nabataean tombs, offering dramatic sunset views over the rock-cut facades. Access to AlUla’s other sites requires driving back south.

Booking 2–3 months ahead is necessary for Heritage Season dates.

Habitas AlUla (from approximately SAR 1,800/night) targets a younger, design-conscious traveller. The social spaces, programme of outdoor activities (sunrise hikes, sound baths, star-gazing), and communal dining area create a different atmosphere from conventional luxury hotels. The outdoor bar and pool area are lively in the evenings during season.

Shaden Resort AlUla (from approximately SAR 900/night) is a more accessible entry point into AlUla’s luxury tier. The property sits in a date palm grove on the valley floor and feels genuinely connected to the landscape. The large pool, restaurant serving Hejazi-inspired cuisine, and organized excursions make it a complete package without the ultra-premium pricing of Banyan Tree or Habitas.

Caravan by Habitas (from approximately SAR 1,400/night) is Habitas’s more intimate and slightly different concept - refurbished vintage caravans set in a canyon landscape. Unique, and popular with Instagram-driven visitors, but the format (small caravans rather than proper rooms) is worth understanding before booking.

Mid-Range Hotels in AlUla (SAR 300–800 per night)

Sahary AlUla Resort (from approximately SAR 550/night) is a solid choice for travellers who want valley views without the top-tier pricing. The low-rise chalets are spread across a hillside with good sight lines over the palm groves, and the on-site restaurant covers breakfast and dinner adequately.

Arac Resort AlUla (from approximately SAR 480/night) on the edge of AlUla town is one of the better-maintained mid-range options. Clean rooms, a swimming pool, and a useful location close to the town centre and museum. The management organises daily guided excursions to Hegra, Dadan, and the Ashar Arts District.

Elysian Boutique Hotel AlUla (from approximately SAR 420/night) is a small, owner-operated property with a more personal service ethic than the larger chain hotels. The rooms are comfortably furnished and the staff can help arrange private guides to Hegra and the canyon trails.

Practical Booking Tips

Heritage Season (October–March) is essential to experience AlUla properly - the Winter at Tantora festival brings concerts, light installations, and film screenings at Maraya. However, availability at desirable properties can be exhausted 2–3 months ahead, especially for December and January weekends.

Summer stays: AlUla in summer (June–September) is genuinely hot (40°C+) but some visitors find the empty landscape rewarding. Luxury resorts discount heavily - Shaden and Sahary can drop to SAR 500–600/night - and you have major sites like Hegra almost to yourself.

Car hire is non-negotiable for independent visitors. Rent from AlUla Airport or book via a national company in advance. A standard 4WD runs approximately SAR 180–280/day, useful for the rougher tracks near Dadan. Budget for petrol - the valley is vast.
