Yanbu Travel Guide: Red Sea Diving, Beaches and Industrial Gateway
Complete guide to Yanbu — Red Sea reef diving, Yanbu Al-Bahr historic district, beaches, and Saudi Arabia's major Red Sea industrial port.
Guides for Yanbu
Yanbu is a Red Sea port city on Saudi Arabia’s west coast — one of the Kingdom’s oldest coastal towns, with a history stretching back to antiquity as a waypoint for Hejaz trade and later as Medina’s primary port. The modern city is dominated by a massive petrochemical complex, but the historic district of Yanbu Al-Bahr and the offshore reefs remain the draw for tourists.
Yanbu Al-Bahr: The Historic District
Yanbu Al-Bahr (Yanbu of the Sea) is the original coastal settlement — a compact old town of traditional Hijazi coral-stone buildings, old mosques, and narrow streets. The architecture shares characteristics with Al-Balad in Jeddah, though on a smaller and less-visited scale.
The district’s most notable buildings include Ottoman-era coral structures along the main lanes and the Al-Rayis mosque, dating from the 19th century. A small Heritage Museum — known locally as the Mataf Museum — is worth the short detour: entry is free, and it is open Saturday through Thursday, 9am–noon and again 4–9pm. The collection covers the maritime and trading history of Yanbu Al-Bahr with maps, tools, and historical photographs.
The walk through the old district covers roughly 1km from the waterfront promenade to the far end of the historic lanes. Allow 90 minutes to walk unhurriedly and photograph the coral-stone facades. Several buildings have been restored; others are in various states of preservation. The waterfront promenade has been developed into a pleasant walking area with views across the Red Sea.
Red Sea Diving and Snorkelling
The reefs off Yanbu are the primary reason international visitors make the trip. Saudi Arabia’s long period of restricted access meant the Red Sea on the Saudi side received very little diving pressure for decades — and the reefs around Yanbu remain in exceptional condition as a result.
Abu Galawa Kebira is the most accessible major reef site — a 30-minute boat ride from Yanbu marina. Depths range from 5 to 25 metres, making it suitable for all certification levels. Coral coverage is strong throughout, and reef sharks are a common sighting at the deeper sections. Visibility typically exceeds 20 metres.
For advanced divers, Al Wajh Bank lies further north along the coast — a deep site reaching 40 metres, with more demanding currents and conditions that reward the extra logistics. Few operators run regular trips this far, so advance arrangement is essential.
Two PADI-certified dive centres operate from Yanbu marina:
Scuba Arabia runs daily trips from the marina, with equipment rental included in the day-trip price of approximately SAR 350 per person. They cater to both certified divers and beginners wanting a discover-diving experience.
Divers Arabia operates at similar pricing and also from the marina. Booking 48 hours ahead is recommended in the October–April high season when the cooler water draws more divers.
See the Red Sea diving guide for a full overview of diving options along the Saudi Red Sea coast, including the Farasan Islands — the remote Red Sea archipelago in the far south of the Kingdom.
Beaches
Al-Nakheel beach sits approximately 30 minutes south of the city — a calm, shallow stretch of Red Sea coastline with clear water and sandy bottom. Access is free. There are no permanent facilities (no toilets, no food stalls), so bring supplies. It is at its best on weekdays when Saudi families tend to use the closer, more developed beaches.
Bin Majid Beach Hotel has a private beach that non-guests can access for SAR 50 per person. The fee covers use of sun loungers and access to a basic beach bar (non-alcoholic). The water is the same as Al-Nakheel, but the facilities make it more comfortable for a full day.
Where to Stay
Movenpick Resort Yanbu is the standout option — a five-star beachfront property on the Red Sea, with direct beach access, a dive centre on site, and rooms from approximately SAR 550 per night. If diving is the main purpose of the visit, staying here simplifies logistics considerably.
Bin Majid Beach Hotel offers four-star comfort with beach access at around SAR 350 per night — a reasonable mid-range option with a well-regarded restaurant.
Al Marsa Hotel is the main budget option in the city at around SAR 180 per night. Functional and clean, suited to those spending most of their time out on the water rather than the hotel.
Where to Eat
Al-Romansiah on the Corniche road is a reliable mid-range option for grilled fish and meat — main dishes run SAR 40–80. It is a chain, but the fish here is notably fresh given the proximity to the port.
The most rewarding eating experience in Yanbu is the fish market process: buy a fresh catch directly from the daily market (prices vary by species and season — expect SAR 30–60 per kg for common reef fish), then take it to one of the restaurants directly adjacent to the market, which will clean, season, and cook it for you for a SAR 20–30 cooking fee. The result is as fresh as it gets. This is how local fishermen eat, and it is significantly better than ordering off a standard restaurant menu.
Getting There
Yanbu is 300km north of Jeddah along the Red Sea coast — a three-hour drive on well-maintained roads. This is the most practical route for most visitors, as Jeddah is the main international arrival point for the western coast.
Yenbo Airport (the official name of Yanbu Regional Airport) has limited connections. Regular domestic flights run from Riyadh; connections from Jeddah are less frequent despite the closer distance. Check Saudia and Flynas schedules, but do not count on convenient timings.
Practical Notes
The industrial city of Yanbu Al-Sinaiyah occupies a large section of the coast north and east of the old town — the petrochemical complex and port facilities are entirely separate from the tourist areas. There is no crossover in practice; tourist zones are clearly distinct.
Yanbu is more conservative in character than Jeddah. Modest dress applies in all public spaces. Book diving and marine tours through our Yanbu page.
