Where to Stay in Mecca: Best Hotels Near Masjid al-Haram

Hotel towers and the Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia

Mecca hotel selection is almost entirely governed by one factor: distance from Masjid al-Haram. The closer to the Grand Mosque, the higher the price — and the more your physical experience of the pilgrimage is shaped by ease of access for multiple daily prayers. Every hotel in Mecca is available exclusively to Muslim guests.

Premium: Abraj Al-Bait Towers (Direct Masjid al-Haram Access)

The Abraj Al-Bait complex is the benchmark for proximity. Three hotel brands occupy towers within the complex, all directly adjacent to the Grand Mosque’s King Abdul Aziz Gate.

Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower is the flagship — at 601 metres it is the dominant structure, with rooms from approximately SAR 1,800 per night outside peak season and SAR 4,000–8,000 during Hajj as of 2026. Rooms on upper floors offer unobstructed views of the Kaaba. The hotel includes multiple restaurants, a spa, and dedicated prayer areas. Some rooms are specifically oriented to give sightlines directly into the mosque’s outer courtyard.

Swissotel Al Maqam Makkah in the same complex offers slightly lower pricing — from approximately SAR 1,200 per night outside peak — with similarly immediate Haram access. The hotel runs 35+ floors with efficient elevator systems designed for pilgrimage throughput.

Raffles Makkah Palace also sits within the Abraj Al-Bait complex, positioned as an ultra-luxury offering with the same gate-adjacent access as the Fairmont and Swissôtel. The choice between these three properties often comes down to preferred floor level, room orientation, and exact positioning within the complex.

Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Hajar Tower Makkah within Abraj Al-Bait provides apartment-style rooms suited to longer pilgrimage stays, with rates from approximately SAR 900 per night outside Hajj season as of 2026.

Luxury: Around the Clock Tower District

Dar Al Tawhid Intercontinental Makkah sits approximately 200 metres from the Grand Mosque’s King Fahad Gate. Rates from approximately SAR 900 per night outside peak season. The hotel has a large lobby catering specifically to Hajj and Umrah groups, multiple Arabic and international restaurants, and dedicated facilities for large tour groups.

Hilton Suites Makkah is roughly 300 metres from the Haram gates. From approximately SAR 800 per night outside peak season. The property is particularly popular with families due to suite configurations. The in-house Al Manzah restaurant serves Saudi and international dishes until late, which suits pilgrims returning from night prayers.

Marriott Mecca occupies the Jabal Omar district — approximately 400 metres from the mosque. Rates from approximately SAR 700 per night outside peak season. The surrounding Jabal Omar complex also contains serviced apartments suitable for extended stays during full Hajj seasons.

Mid-Range: 500 Metres to 1km from the Haram

Elaf Mashaer Hotel and the broader Elaf chain have multiple properties in the 500–800 metre range from the Grand Mosque, offering rates from approximately SAR 350–600 per night outside peak season as of 2026. These properties cater primarily to Umrah groups and offer reliable standards without the premium of the tower hotels.

Al Shohada Hotel (approximately 600 metres from the Haram) runs from approximately SAR 300 per night in off-peak months. The hotel provides shuttle services to the mosque gates and has a functional restaurant serving Middle Eastern breakfast and dinner.

Makkah Millennium Hotel in the Aziziyah district sits approximately 1 kilometre from the Haram. Rates from approximately SAR 280 per night in low season. The walk to the mosque is manageable in cooler months (November–February) but challenging in summer heat. In summer, the hotel’s free shuttle to the Haram is effectively essential.

Budget: Further Afield (1–3km from the Haram)

The Ajyad Mercure Mecca and various independent hotels in the Ajyad district offer rates from approximately SAR 200–280 per night for standard rooms. Service quality varies. All are within taxi or shuttle distance of the mosque — the walk in peak season heat (June–August, with temperatures regularly above 40°C) is not advised.

Booking Notes

During Hajj season (the 5–6 days of Dhul Hijjah), international pilgrims must book accommodation through official Hajj packages via their national Hajj mission or the Nusuk platform (nusuk.sa). Independent hotel booking during Hajj is generally unavailable to overseas pilgrims.

For Umrah at any time of year, hotels can be booked independently through standard platforms. Ramadan sees the second-highest demand — book at least three months in advance for peak Ramadan weeks.

Before you book your room, arrange an airport transfer for a smooth arrival, take out travel insurance that covers your stay, and pick up a Saudi eSIM for seamless connectivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the closest hotel to Masjid al-Haram in Mecca?
The Abraj Al-Bait Towers (comprising the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower, Swissotel Al Maqam, and Mövenpick Hotel & Residences) are directly adjacent to the Grand Mosque entrance — guests can see the Kaaba from upper-floor rooms. The Dar Al Tawhid Intercontinental is also within 200 metres of the Haram gates.
How much do Mecca hotels cost during Hajj season?
Hajj season (Dhul Hijjah) sees the highest prices of the year. Premium towers in the Abraj Al-Bait complex can reach SAR 3,000–8,000 per night as of 2026. Mid-range hotels 500 metres from the Haram run approximately SAR 800–1,500 per night. Hotels further from the Haram (1–2km) drop to SAR 300–700 per night. Book Hajj accommodation through official packages via nusuk.sa — independent booking during Hajj is restricted for international pilgrims.
Can non-Muslims book hotels in Mecca?
No. Hotels in Mecca require guests to be Muslim. Hotels verify guest religion upon check-in and Saudi law restricts non-Muslims from entering the city. Booking platforms may allow reservations to be made, but check-in will be refused for non-Muslim guests.
When is the cheapest time to visit Mecca?
Outside Hajj season and Ramadan, Mecca hotels drop significantly. The months of Muharram, Safar, and Jumada Al-Ula typically see lower prices and smaller crowds, making them the most comfortable periods for Umrah. Mid-week stays are generally cheaper than weekend arrivals (Thursday–Saturday being the peak in Saudi Arabia).
