Flights to Saudi Arabia — Booking Tips, Airlines & Best Deals
Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in air connectivity as part of its tourism expansion, and the country is now reachable by direct flight from most major world cities. With three large international airports and a national carrier operating one of the world’s newest fleets, getting to Saudi Arabia is straightforward. Here is what we recommend knowing before booking.
Saudi Arabia’s Major International Airports
King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh is the country’s largest and busiest airport. It handles the majority of international traffic and sits about 35 km north of central Riyadh. It serves as the main hub for Saudia (the national carrier) and flynas.
King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah is the primary gateway for western Saudi Arabia and the closest major airport to Mecca and Medina. It handles enormous volumes of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims alongside regular tourist and business traffic. The airport is about 19 km north of Jeddah city centre.
King Fahd International Airport (DMM) in Dammam serves the Eastern Province, including the cities of Dammam, Dhahran, and Al Khobar. It is the gateway to the Gulf coast and the business hub of the eastern region. Located about 30 km northwest of central Dammam.
Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) in Medina handles significant international traffic, primarily for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims, with direct flights from across the Muslim world.
NEOM Bay Airport (NUM) and the planned airports for AlUla and the Red Sea development (KAIA Red Sea) are part of Saudi Arabia’s tourism infrastructure expansion, though at the time of writing, international commercial service to these remains limited.
Airlines Serving Saudi Arabia
From the UK, Saudia operates direct flights from London Heathrow to Riyadh and Jeddah. British Airways flies direct to Riyadh. flynas occasionally operates London routes. Flight time from London to Riyadh is approximately 6 hours 30 minutes.
From the US, Saudia operates direct flights from Washington Dulles (IAD) and New York (JFK) to Riyadh and Jeddah. United Airlines has launched direct service to Jeddah. Flight time from New York to Riyadh is approximately 11 hours.
From Europe, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, and numerous other carriers serve Riyadh and Jeddah. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is a popular connection point for European cities without direct Saudi service.
From Asia, direct flights are available from virtually every major Asian city. Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways provide extensive connectivity via their Gulf hubs (though direct flights from neighbouring Gulf states to Saudi cities are also plentiful). IndiGo, Air India, Pakistan International Airlines, and many Southeast Asian carriers serve Saudi airports with high-frequency routes driven by the large expatriate worker population.
Saudia is the national carrier and operates the widest network of international and domestic routes. Its fleet is modern, and full-service economy includes meals and checked baggage.
flynas is Saudi Arabia’s largest budget carrier, offering lower fares on domestic and regional international routes. It covers destinations across the Middle East, North Africa, South and Central Asia, and some European cities.
flyadeal is a newer budget carrier focused on domestic and regional routes, often with competitive fares.
Best Time to Book for Deals
Saudi Arabia’s flight pricing is heavily influenced by Hajj (dates shift annually based on the Islamic calendar) and Umrah season, which peaks in Ramadan. During Hajj, flights to Jeddah and Medina are at maximum capacity and price, and availability becomes scarce months ahead.
For tourism purposes, the cheapest fares appear for June through August departures, when extreme heat (regularly exceeding 45°C) keeps leisure visitor numbers down. October through March is the most comfortable travel period weather-wise, and fares are moderate outside the Hajj/Ramadan windows.
For the best prices, we recommend booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead for European and regional routes, and 3 to 5 months ahead for US routes. Hajj-period flights should be booked as early as possible — 6+ months ahead.
Return flights from London to Riyadh start from approximately £250-350 in shoulder season, rising to £500+ during peak periods as of 2026. From the US, returns range from approximately $600-900 in off-peak to $1,200+ during Hajj as of 2026.
Domestic Flights Within Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is a large country — Riyadh to Jeddah is approximately 950 km, and driving takes about 9 hours. Domestic flights are the practical way to move between major cities.
Riyadh to Jeddah takes approximately 2 hours and is one of the world’s busiest domestic air routes. Riyadh to Dammam takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Jeddah to Medina is approximately 1 hour. Riyadh to AlUla takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
Saudia, flynas, and flyadeal all compete on major domestic routes, keeping fares competitive. One-way domestic fares start from approximately SAR 150-250 (roughly $40-65) if booked ahead as of 2026. The Haramain High-Speed Railway connects Mecca, Jeddah, and Medina and is an alternative to flying on that corridor.
Budget Tips
Compare Saudia and flynas on every route. The budget carriers often undercut Saudia on headline fares, but Saudia includes checked luggage and meals — factor in the total cost when comparing.
Fly via Gulf hubs for connections. If coming from Southeast Asia, Africa, or other regions without direct Saudi flights, routing via Dubai (Emirates), Abu Dhabi (Etihad), or Doha (Qatar Airways) often produces competitive fares.
Avoid Hajj and Ramadan periods unless performing pilgrimage. Flights to Jeddah and Medina during these times are substantially more expensive and sell out early.
Book internal flights early. Domestic routes between Riyadh, Jeddah, and tourist destinations like AlUla fill up during Saudi weekends (Thursday-Friday) and national holidays. Booking 4-6 weeks ahead secures the best fares.
Use fare comparison tools to check across the many carriers serving Saudi Arabia. The competition between full-service and budget airlines means significant price variation on identical routes.
Getting from the Airport to the City
King Khalid (Riyadh) to city centre: The Riyadh Metro and airport express (when fully operational) connects the airport to central Riyadh. Taxis and ride-hailing (Uber and Careem both operate) cost approximately SAR 60-90 for the 30-minute drive as of 2026.
King Abdulaziz (Jeddah) to city centre: Taxis and ride-hailing cost approximately SAR 40-70 for the 20-25 minute drive to central Jeddah as of 2026. The Haramain railway station is within the airport complex for onward travel to Mecca or Medina.
King Fahd (Dammam) to Dammam/Al Khobar: The airport is relatively remote. Taxis cost approximately SAR 80-120 for the 30-40 minute drive to Al Khobar or central Dammam as of 2026. Ride-hailing is available and usually cheaper.
