Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz Airport (IATA: ULH) is a small domestic airport serving AlUla and the surrounding region. It handles direct connections from Riyadh and Jeddah — enough for most visitors — but lacks the ground transport infrastructure you’d expect at larger Saudi airports. No Metro, no ride-hailing, and unreliable taxis mean that pre-booking your transfer is less optional here than elsewhere in Saudi Arabia.
Airport Overview
ULH is a compact terminal serving primarily domestic routes. The arrivals area is straightforward: a single exit leads to a small forecourt where taxis and pre-booked transfers wait. There are ATMs and a small café inside the terminal. Currency exchange is not reliably available, so carry sufficient Saudi riyals or ensure your card works before arriving.
Key facts:
- IATA code: ULH
- Distance to AlUla Old Town: approximately 12–18 km
- Distance to Habitas AlUla / Banyan Tree AlUla (Ashar Valley): approximately 20–30 km
- Drive time to AlUla town: 20–30 minutes
- Drive time to Ashar Valley resorts: 25–40 minutes
Flight Connections to AlUla
Direct domestic flights operate from:
- Riyadh (RUH): Multiple daily flights; journey time approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. Operated by Saudia and flynas. Frequency increases during Heritage Season (October–March).
- Jeddah (JED): Direct services available; journey time approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Availability varies by season — check current schedules as routes change.
There are no direct international flights into ULH. International travellers arrive via Riyadh or Jeddah and take a domestic connection or drive. Search flights to Saudi Arabia — you’ll need to route via RUH or JED and connect to ULH, or consider flying into Medina (MED) and driving the 4.5-hour highway route.
Option 1: Pre-Booked Private Transfer (Recommended)
For a destination with no ride-hailing and limited taxis, a pre-booked private transfer is the reliable choice. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall, handles luggage, and takes you directly to your hotel or resort.
Book via Kiwitaxi or GetTransfer, both of which offer fixed-price transfers with confirmation in advance.
Approximate fares from ULH (as of 2026):
| Destination | Estimated Fare (SAR) |
|---|---|
| AlUla Old Town (central) | SAR 100–160 |
| Habitas AlUla (Ashar Valley) | SAR 180–260 |
| Banyan Tree AlUla (Ashar Valley) | SAR 200–280 |
| Hegra Visitor Centre | SAR 200–280 |
Prices vary by vehicle class and provider. Book a saloon car for 1–2 passengers with light luggage; an SUV or minivan for groups or travellers with extensive kit.
Option 2: Resort Shuttle or Transfer
Both major desert camp properties offer pre-arranged airport pickups:
Habitas AlUla: offers transfers from ULH as part of package bookings and as a separately bookable add-on. Confirm availability and cost when making your reservation. Habitas can also arrange a pickup from AlUla town if you arrive by other means.
Banyan Tree AlUla: similarly offers resort transfers from ULH. Approximately SAR 150–300 per transfer depending on vehicle type. The concierge team can coordinate same-day pickup if you provide your arrival details in advance.
For mid-range properties in AlUla town, check directly with your hotel — some offer shuttles while others do not.
Option 3: Rental Car
A rental car is the most flexible option for an AlUla stay, given how spread out the sites are. Hegra, Dadan, Elephant Rock, and the canyon areas are all in different directions from town, and public transport between them does not exist.
Car hire desks at ULH are limited. We recommend booking in advance through a national operator rather than expecting walk-up availability, particularly outside Heritage Season. Rates from approximately SAR 150–300/day. See our Saudi Arabia car rental guide for advice on booking, insurance, and driving conditions.
Option 4: Local Taxi
Unmetered local taxis occasionally wait outside arrivals at ULH. Availability is inconsistent — more reliable during Heritage Season when more flights arrive. There is no meter; agree on the fare before departing. Expect to pay SAR 100–200 to AlUla town, more to the resort areas.
Do not count on taxi availability as your primary plan, particularly for late evening arrivals.
Getting to AlUla by Road
For travellers not flying directly to ULH, road access to AlUla is practical from several major cities:
| Origin | Route | Approximate Drive Time |
|---|---|---|
| Medina | Highway 15 north | 4.5–5 hours |
| Riyadh | Highway 65 then 15 | 10–12 hours |
| Tabuk | Highway 15 south | 2.5–3 hours |
| Jeddah | Highway 15 via Medina | 7–8 hours |
The Riyadh–AlUla and Medina–AlUla routes are well-paved highway drives through dramatic desert landscape. Fuel stations are available at regular intervals. See our Riyadh to AlUla road trip guide for the full route, stops, and driving tips.
From Medina: A Practical Alternative Route
Many visitors to AlUla combine the trip with a Medina pilgrimage visit or a connection from the Haramain High-Speed Railway. From Medina airport or the city centre, the road north to AlUla is straightforward on Highway 15. You can pre-book a private intercity transfer from Medina to AlUla (approximately SAR 600–900 one way) or rent a car from Medina and drive.
Practical Notes
Luggage and vehicle size: the Ashar Valley resort roads are paved but narrow in places. Standard saloon cars manage them without difficulty; large minivans may find some resort access tracks tighter. Confirm vehicle requirements with your resort if hiring a large vehicle.
Heritage Season flight demand: during peak Heritage Season (December–February, particularly around Winter at Tantora festival weeks), flights to ULH fill quickly. Book your flight to AlUla at the same time as your accommodation — not as an afterthought. The destination is popular and capacity on the Riyadh and Jeddah routes is limited.
Travel insurance: AlUla’s remote location means limited local medical facilities. Arrange travel insurance before travelling — medical evacuation cover is relevant for a destination this far from a major hospital.
