AlUla has enough bookable tours to fill an entire week — and enough bad ones to waste a day. Most visitors arrive with two to four days and a specific list of things they need to see. The question isn’t whether to do a tour (Hegra and Dadan require them by law), but which format gets you the right experience for your available time and budget.
Here’s how the main AlUla tours compare, and which one to book for your specific situation.

Here are the tours worth booking in 2026, with a frank assessment of each.
Hegra Guided Tour
Hegra — also known as Madain Salih — is AlUla’s UNESCO World Heritage Site and its most extraordinary individual experience. The Nabataean carved tombs here are structurally similar to Petra in Jordan but receive a fraction of the visitors and maintain a quality of silence and preservation that Petra’s scale makes impossible. Over 111 monumental tombs are carved into the sandstone outcrops of Jabal Ithlib and the surrounding formations; the largest — the Tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza — stands 22 metres high.
Book the AlUla: Hegra Guided Tour — approximately 3–4 hours at the site. Price from approximately SAR 230–350 per person as of 2026. A licensed Royal Commission guide is included; entry to Hegra is only permitted as part of a supervised tour.
The tour covers the main tomb clusters — Qasr al-Farid (the single most-photographed tomb, carved from an isolated outcrop), Jabal Al-Ahmar, and the Lihyanite rock art panels. Photography is permitted throughout.
Best for: Anyone who has visited Petra and wants to see the lesser-known Nabataean city. Also powerful for those who haven’t been to Petra — there are no crowds to compete with here. The single most important site in AlUla.
Hegra, Dadan and Ikmah Highlights Tour
The strongest value combined day tour in AlUla. After Hegra, the tour moves to Dadan — the capital of the Lihyanite and Dadanite kingdoms that preceded the Nabataeans — and Jabal Ikmah, an open-air library of Lihyanite inscriptions carved into the rock faces of the valley walls. Ikmah contains thousands of ancient inscriptions in multiple scripts, including Dedanite, Minaean, Lihyanite, Nabataean, and early Arabic.
Book the AlUla Hegra, Dadan and Ikmah Highlights Tour — approximately 6–7 hours. Price from approximately SAR 320–450 per person as of 2026. Hotel pickup from AlUla accommodation included.
Best for: Visitors with two days in AlUla who want to use one full day on the pre-Islamic archaeological sites before spending the second on Old Town, Elephant Rock, and the valley landscape.
AlUla Full-Day Wonders Tour
The most comprehensive single-day itinerary available: Hegra in the morning, Dadan and Ikmah in the late morning, a traditional lunch, and Elephant Rock at sunset. This tour is designed for visitors who have only one full day in AlUla and need to cover the maximum number of significant sites in a single circuit.
Book the AlUla Full-Day Wonders Tour: Hegra, Dadan, Ikmah & Elephant Rock — approximately 9–10 hours. Price from approximately SAR 380–550 per person as of 2026.
The sunset at Elephant Rock — a 52-metre free-standing sandstone formation sculpted by wind erosion — closes the day particularly well. The rock turns deep orange in the last hour before sundown and is one of the most photogenic moments in Saudi Arabia.
Best for: One-day visitors on a transit from Riyadh or Jeddah, and anyone who wants the full AlUla picture without committing to multiple separate tour bookings.
AlUla Old Town Guided Tour
AlUla Old Town is a 13th-century mud-brick settlement built into the narrowest section of the valley. At its peak it housed 900 structures across 400 metres of densely packed residential and commercial space — merchants, farmers, and travellers on the Darb al-Hajj (the overland hajj route from the north). The town was gradually abandoned between the 1970s and 1980s as residents moved to the modern city below; the empty labyrinth of mud-brick houses, the mosque, the market spaces, and the AlUla Fort are now being progressively stabilised.
Book the AlUla Old Town Guided Tour — approximately 2–3 hours. Price from approximately SAR 120–200 per person as of 2026.
The site is not immediately legible without a guide — the narrow lanes, locked structures, and partially collapsed sections require navigation assistance. A guide covers the social geography of who lived where, the construction methods (mud brick over stone foundations, with palm trunk roofing), and the daily life of the town’s last residents.
Best for: Architecture and urban history visitors. A natural morning or late-afternoon addition to a Hegra day, given that Old Town is five minutes’ drive from the main heritage area.
AlUla Full Day Private Tour: A Journey Through Time
For groups or visitors who prefer a dedicated guide to themselves, this private full-day format covers all of AlUla’s main sites on a customised schedule. The itinerary is flexible — typically Hegra in the morning when light hits the eastern tombs, Dadan and Ikmah in the late morning, Old Town over lunch, and Elephant Rock and the Oasis Farm in the afternoon. The private format allows extended time at any individual site and adjusts to the group’s pace and interests.
Book the AlUla Full Day Private Tour — approximately 9 hours. Price from approximately SAR 900–1,400 per person for a couple as of 2026 (private pricing; group rate decreases significantly with size).
Best for: Couples, small families, and solo travellers who find group tour pacing frustrating. Photographers who need to move on their own schedule around Hegra.
AlUla Layali Tales Tour
An evening heritage experience unlike anything else in the region. The Layali Tales format uses AlUla’s valley landscape as a backdrop for a narrative-led tour combining live performance, storytelling, traditional music, and the illuminated landscape of the heritage sites at night. The route moves through Old Town and the valley with theatrical elements embedded at key points — a combination of archaeology and performance art that the Royal Commission has developed specifically for AlUla.
Book the AlUla Layali Tales Tour — approximately 2.5–3 hours. Price from approximately SAR 180–280 per person as of 2026. Runs in the Winter at Tantora festival season (December–February) and on selected dates in spring and autumn. Check availability carefully.
Best for: Visitors during the winter festival period, and anyone seeking a distinctly AlUla experience beyond standard archaeological site visits. Particularly memorable on clear winter nights when stars are visible above the valley walls.
AlUla Solo Explorer: Cultural Highlights Tour
Designed explicitly for solo travellers who want to join a small guided group without the social dynamic of a large bus tour. This format caps at six participants and covers Hegra, Old Town, and Elephant Rock with extra time at each site for independent photography. The guide adjusts the depth of commentary based on the group’s interest level.
Book the AlUla Solo Explorer Cultural Highlights Tour — approximately 8 hours. Price from approximately SAR 350–520 per person as of 2026. Maximum six participants.
Best for: Solo travellers, travel writers, and photographers who want a guide but find large group tours logistically awkward.
How to Choose: Decision Guide by Visitor Type
You have one day in AlUla → Book the Full-Day Wonders Tour. It covers all four major sites in a single structured route. Exhausting but efficient.
You have two days in AlUla → Day 1: Hegra Guided Tour in the morning, AlUla Old Town in the afternoon. Day 2: Hegra, Dadan & Ikmah as a full-day combination. This is the strongest two-day programme.
You’re a solo traveller → The Solo Explorer Tour caps at six participants and moves at a pace that works for photographers and independent travellers. Better value than a private tour at similar quality.
You’re visiting as a couple or small group → The Private Full-Day Tour costs more per person but gives you complete schedule control. Worth it at Hegra, where you can linger at specific tombs rather than moving with a group.
You’re visiting during the Winter at Tantora festival → Add the Layali Tales Evening Tour to whatever daytime tours you book. It’s an entirely different experience — theatrical, atmospheric, and only possible in the festival season.
You have a strong archaeology interest → Prioritise Hegra, Dadan & Ikmah over the full-day wonders version. Dadan and Ikmah deserve the time that the rushed full-day format doesn’t allow.
You’re on a budget → The Old Town Guided Tour at SAR 120–200 is genuinely worthwhile and can be combined with a self-guided Elephant Rock visit (free entry). Hegra requires a paid tour — there’s no way around that one.
Tours We’d Skip
The desert jeep sunset drives can be booked independently through your hotel at lower cost than tour platforms; this is one category where a local operator quote beats GetYourGuide pricing. The camel trekking packages that surface in searches are typically short (15–20 minutes), expensive for what they are, and peripheral to AlUla’s main attractions. Skip them unless it’s specifically what you’re after.
Browse the full list of AlUla tours for current availability and real-time pricing. Book a Saudi eSIM before arrival — coverage in the heritage areas is good, but patchy on the valley approach roads. Add travel insurance if you’re booking peak-season tours weeks ahead; summer heat occasionally forces last-minute schedule changes.
