Elephant Rock — known in Arabic as Jabal AlFil — is an 52-metre-high sandstone formation that genuinely looks like an elephant raising its trunk. That is not a travel-brochure stretch: the natural rock arch at the base reads clearly as a raised trunk, and the rounded profile of the summit convincingly suggests a large animal at rest. It is one of the most photographed natural formations in Saudi Arabia, and at sunset the colour transformation — from pale buff through amber to deep ochre — makes it one of the more visually compelling sights in the wider AlUla valley.
Entry is free. There is no gate, no booking system, and no guided tour requirement. You can drive to the base, park, and walk around the rock entirely independently.
Entry, Access, and Opening Hours
Entry fee: free — no ticket required at any time.
The site has no enforced opening hours. Visits are possible 24 hours a day, and the rock is illuminated at night during the Winter at Tantora festival period (typically late November to January), when a restaurant and dining experience operate at its base.
Outside festival season, there are no facilities at the rock itself — no water, no shade, and no toilets. Bring everything you need.
Car parking is available in a cleared sand area approximately 200 metres from the rock’s base. From there it is a short flat walk across sand to reach the arch.
Tour Operators and Prices
While independent access is free, the majority of visitors arrive on guided sunset or evening tours that include transport, a guide, and often refreshments.
Sunset jeep tour to Elephant Rock and AlUla valley: approximately SAR 150–220 per person. These depart 90 minutes before sunset, stop at viewpoints across the valley, and spend 45–60 minutes at Elephant Rock for photography. Private sunset photography tour: approximately SAR 400–600 for up to 4 people. Private departures allow more time at the rock and can be timed precisely around golden-hour light.
Elephant Rock Dining Experience: Operates seasonally during the Winter at Tantora festival (approximately November to January). A dining setup is installed near the base of the rock, serving a set menu at approximately SAR 350–500 per person. Booking is essential and sells out weeks in advance; reserve via experiencealula.com as soon as dates are published.
GetYourGuide operators: Multiple guides offer Elephant Rock as part of wider AlUla evening tours, typically combining the rock with a stop at the AlUla Old Town viewpoint and sometimes including Maraya concert hall exterior. Prices range from approximately SAR 130–190 per person.
Getting There from AlUla City
Self-drive (recommended)
Elephant Rock is approximately 11km north of AlUla city centre, a 12–15 minute drive. Take Al Hijaz Road north and follow signs for “Jabal AlFil” — the signage has improved significantly since 2023 and is now clearly marked in English and Arabic.
A rental car from AlUla Regional Airport gives you the most flexibility, particularly for timing sunset visits precisely. Rental cars: available from Hertz, Budget, and local operators at AlUla Regional Airport (ULH) from approximately SAR 160–250 per day as of 2026.
Taxi and ride-hailing
From AlUla city centre, a one-way taxi to Elephant Rock costs approximately SAR 30–50. Careem and InDrive both operate in AlUla. Note that drivers may not always wait — agree a return fare or arrange a pickup time before dismissing the taxi, particularly in the evening when demand is high and available vehicles limited.
From AlUla Regional Airport (ULH)
Elephant Rock is approximately 14km from the airport terminal — about 15 minutes by road. This makes it practical as a first stop after arriving on an afternoon flight, with sunset timing frequently aligning well.
Getting to AlUla from major Saudi cities
- From Riyadh (RUH): Fly to AlUla (ULH), approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Fares from approximately SAR 300–600 return. Flynas, flyadeal, and Saudi Airlines operate daily direct flights.
- From Jeddah (JED): Fly to AlUla (ULH), approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Return fares from approximately SAR 280–500.
- From Medina (MED): Fly (approximately 1 hour, from SAR 250–400 return) or drive the 380km along Highway 15, which takes approximately 3.5–4 hours.
Photography Guide
Best positions:

The arch/trunk view: Stand 50–80 metres directly south of the rock and face north. At sunset, the low light from the west catches the right side of the arch and creates strong contrast.

The profile view: Move to the west of the rock (roughly 100 metres away) to capture the full elephant silhouette — head, trunk, and back — against the sky. This is the classic composition used in most promotional images.

The base-level arch shot: Walk through the arch from south to north. From inside the tunnel, looking out at the sky creates a dramatic natural frame.
Lens recommendation: A mid-range zoom (24–70mm equivalent) handles both wide context shots and compressed telephoto compositions of the summit. Drone flights in AlUla require a permit from the Royal Commission for AlUla — apply via experiencealula.com at least 48 hours in advance.
Light quality by month: October and November provide warm, low sunset light at manageable temperatures (18–27°C at sunset). December and January are slightly cooler (12–18°C at sunset) but the light quality remains excellent. February sees slightly longer days, pushing sunset later.
What to Bring and Practical Notes
- Water: At least 1.5 litres per person. No vendors at the site outside festival season.
- Footwear: Flat walking shoes are fine for the sandy approach. The terrain around the rock is uneven sandstone, but nothing requires hiking boots.
- Sun protection: Even in November and December, the low sun at golden hour is direct. Sunscreen and a hat are worth carrying for the afternoon approach walk.
- Timing: Arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset to explore the rock from multiple angles while the light shifts.
Combining Elephant Rock with Other AlUla Attractions
Elephant Rock is easy to combine with other AlUla sites in a single day:

This combination covers AlUla’s three flagship attractions in a logical geographic sequence, as all three are located along or just off Al Hijaz Road within a 25km stretch. Most licensed day-tour operators offer exactly this itinerary.
Best Season
October to February is optimal. Sunset temperatures range from 14°C to 26°C, making the walk comfortable. The Winter at Tantora festival (November to January) adds evening activities, illuminated nights at Elephant Rock, and the dining experience.
March and April are workable but warming rapidly — expect 30–35°C by midday, though sunset hours remain pleasant.
May to September: Strongly not recommended for outdoor photography visits. Temperatures regularly exceed 42°C through the afternoon and sunset hours, and the experience is significantly diminished.
