AlUla sits in a sandstone valley 300km northeast of Medina, and it contains some of the most significant historical sites in the entire Arabian Peninsula. The UNESCO-listed ancient city of Hegra (Madain Saleh), the monolithic Elephant Rock, the mirror-clad Maraya concert hall, and the atmospheric mud-brick Old Town make AlUla one of the most compelling destinations in Saudi Arabia for visitors with even a passing interest in history or landscape.

Hegra (Madain Saleh): The Nabataean Tombs

Hegra is the standout attraction — Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most important Nabataean settlement outside Petra in Jordan. The site contains 111 well-preserved rock-cut tombs dating primarily from the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE, carved directly into the sandstone outcrops of the Hejaz desert.

Access is strictly by guided tour only. Tours depart from the AlUla Experience Centre in the Old Town by electric vehicle, which keeps vehicle noise and emissions off the site. The circuit covers the principal tomb clusters — Jabal al-Ahmar, Jabal Ithlib, and the solitary monumental tomb at Jabal al-Banat — with time at each stop for photography and walking among the carved facades.

Operators:

  • Experience AlUla (the official Royal Commission operator): half-day Hegra tours from SAR 200 per person as of 2026; full-day site packages from SAR 450. Book at experiencealula.com or through the Experience AlUla app.
  • Desert Experiences AlUla: private guided Hegra tours from SAR 950 for a group of 1–4. Guide speaks English and Arabic. Day trip from airport pickup to return available.
  • AlUla Retreats: combination packages (Hegra + Old Town + Elephant Rock in one day) from SAR 580 per person as of 2026, with hotel pickup included.

Allow a minimum of 3 hours for Hegra. The light is best in early morning — request a morning departure if possible.

Elephant Rock (Jabal al-Fil)

Elephant Rock is a free-standing sandstone monolith rising approximately 52 metres from the desert floor, shaped by millennia of wind erosion into a form that unmistakably resembles the head and trunk of an elephant. It sits about 11km northeast of AlUla Old Town and is accessible by standard vehicle on a paved road — no 4WD required.

There is no entry fee. The rock is open from sunrise to 11pm. An adjacent outdoor bar and restaurant area operates evenings during the October–March season, making Elephant Rock a popular sunset and dinner destination.

Most full-day AlUla tour packages include Elephant Rock as one stop. Independent visitors with a rental car can reach it easily. Sunset lighting on the rock’s reddish sandstone is particularly photogenic.

Maraya Concert Hall

Maraya — meaning “mirror” in Arabic — is an extraordinary piece of architecture: a concert hall clad entirely in mirrored panels that reflect the surrounding desert and sky. At 9,740 square metres of mirrored surface, it holds the Guinness record for the world’s largest mirrored building.

The building hosts concerts, festivals, and cultural events as part of the Winter at Tantora programme (December–March). Outside of event periods, Maraya operates as a restaurant and function venue. The exterior is accessible for photography year-round. The mirrored effect is strongest in the two hours before sunset, when the desert light catches the panels at low angle.

Check the Experience AlUla events calendar for concert dates and ticket prices — performances have included international artists alongside regional acts. Ticket prices vary significantly by event, typically SAR 150–600 per person.

AlUla Old Town

The Old Town (Al-Qura district) is a 900-year-old mud-brick settlement built along a valley floor, with hundreds of interconnected houses, a souk, and a 13th-century mosque. It was inhabited until the 1980s before residents were relocated to the modern town. Restoration is ongoing.

Entry to the Old Town is free. The Welcome Centre adjacent to the Old Town provides site maps and background information. The restored souk section is the most photogenic — narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, and warm sandstone walls. A resident guide can be hired from the Welcome Centre for approximately SAR 80–120 for a 90-minute walking tour as of 2026.

Practical Information

Getting around AlUla: Tours include transport; independent visitors need a rental car. Several Riyadh-based car hire companies operate at AlUla Regional Airport. Distances between sites are 10–25km — too far to walk.

Booking ahead: Hegra tours must be pre-booked, especially during the winter festival season when slots fill weeks in advance. Other sites are walkup-accessible but guided tours offer considerably more context.

Dress code: Modest dress is required at all heritage sites — shoulders and knees covered. Comfortable closed shoes for walking on uneven terrain around the tombs.

Where to stay: AlUla has accommodation ranging from Shaden Resort (from approximately SAR 800/night as of 2026) to the boutique Dar Tantora tented camp (from SAR 1,400/night). Budget options are limited — book ahead during the October–March peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a guide to visit Hegra (Madain Saleh)?
Yes. Hegra is a restricted UNESCO World Heritage Site — independent access is not permitted. All visits are by guided tour only, departing from AlUla Old Town or the nearby welcome centre. Tours run in small groups by electric vehicle to protect the site. Book in advance, especially October–March when demand is highest.
How do I get to AlUla from Riyadh or Jeddah?
AlUla Regional Airport (ULH) has direct flights from Riyadh (approximately 2 hours) and Jeddah (1.5 hours) on Saudia and flynas. Flight prices vary widely — booking 4–6 weeks ahead generally secures better fares. There is no practical road alternative for international visitors; the drive from Riyadh is over 1,100km.
What is the best time to visit AlUla?
October through March is the ideal window. Daytime temperatures range 18–28°C, making outdoor site visits comfortable. The famous Winter at Tantora festival runs December–March, with concerts at Maraya and cultural events across the region. April and May are transitional — warm but manageable. June–September is extremely hot (40°C+) and most outdoor touring is uncomfortable.
How much does an AlUla tour cost?
Prices vary by operator and itinerary. Half-day Hegra tours start from approximately SAR 200 per person as of 2026. Full-day tours covering Hegra plus Elephant Rock and Old Town typically range SAR 400–650 per person. Private vehicle options start from SAR 900–1,200 for a group of 4. Prices as of 2026 — check with operators for current rates.
