The desert around Riyadh provides access to some of the most dramatic landscapes in central Arabia without requiring the multi-day expedition of the Empty Quarter. The Red Sand area (Al-Rimal Al-Hamra) 45km east of the city has reddish-orange dunes reaching 30–40 metres, open enough for dune driving and atmospheric enough for a proper desert experience. For visitors based in Riyadh wanting a concentrated dose of desert, a half-day or full-day safari from the city is a practical and highly satisfying option.
Tour Options by Budget
Budget (SAR 150–200 per person)
At the budget end, shared group safaris cover the essentials: return 4WD transport from Riyadh, dune bashing through the Red Sand area, and tea and coffee at a stop point. Camel rides are typically add-ons at SAR 30–50 per person.
Riyadh Adventure Club runs shared weekend safaris (Friday and Saturday departures at 3pm, back by 9pm) for SAR 150 per person. The groups run at 8–16 people in convoy. Book via their WhatsApp line or website — fills up on popular weekends.
Desert Fun Riyadh offers half-day budget shared tours (4 hours) from SAR 180 per person including dune bashing, quad bike rental for 20 minutes, and a refreshments stop. Good for solo travellers and those on a tight budget.
Mid-Range (SAR 250–400 per person)
Mid-range packages add a structured experience — a BBQ dinner in the desert, traditional Saudi music and entertainment, a camel ride circuit, and often sandboarding on the dunes.
Arabia Nights Desert Camp: full-evening experience (4pm–10pm) from SAR 290 per person as of 2026. Includes 4WD dune bashing, camel ride, sandboarding, traditional BBQ dinner (whole lamb options available for groups), Arabic coffee and dates. Groups of 10–40. Hotel pickup available for SAR 40 extra per person.
Desert Escape Riyadh: similar package at SAR 350 per person with a smaller group cap (maximum 20). The smaller group gives more dune bashing time per vehicle and a quieter dinner setup. Popular for corporate events and family groups.
Premium (SAR 500–1,000+ per person)
Premium packages are built around comfort, exclusivity, and production quality. Expect private vehicles, a professional driver-guide, a proper Bedouin-style dining setup with decorated carpets and floor cushions, live oud music, and significantly more dune time.
Royal Desert Experience Riyadh: private premium tour from SAR 550 per person (minimum 4 persons) as of 2026. Includes a licensed English-speaking guide, luxury 4WD convoy, a 3-hour dune circuit, camel polo experience, a private chef-prepared dinner in a furnished camp, and return drop-off. Sunset timing for maximum photographic effect.
Luxury Desert by Burak Adventures: bespoke private safaris from SAR 900 per person for groups of 2–6. Fully customisable itinerary, professional photography service optional (SAR 200 extra). Overnight tent camp in the Al-Kharj area with furnished tents, proper beds, generator power, and breakfast. Best for honeymoons, anniversary trips, and guests accustomed to luxury experiences.
Activities in Detail
Dune Bashing
Dune bashing — driving a 4WD at speed over and down dune faces — is the signature desert activity. Standard vehicles have tyres deflated to 15–18 PSI for maximum grip and float on sand. The experience ranges from gentle slopes to near-vertical descents depending on the driver and the dune field chosen.
Duration per vehicle: typically 45–90 minutes of active driving in a circuit. The experience is physically vigorous — expect to be thrown around inside the cabin. Those with back problems, neck injuries, or motion sickness should discuss this with the operator before booking.
Camel Rides
Camel rides at Riyadh desert camps are typically 10–20 minute guided circuits — sufficient for photos and a first experience of the gait, but not a camelback trek. Most operators include them as part of a package. The camels used for tourist rides in the Riyadh area are well-habituated to visitors.
Longer camel experiences (1–2 hour guided rides with a Bedouin handler) are available through Desert Gate Riyadh from SAR 180 per person, separate from the dune bashing packages.
Sandboarding
Sandboarding — riding a board face-first or standing down a dune face — is offered by most mid-range operators as part of the package. No prior experience needed; operators provide boards and basic instruction. The Red Sand dunes are well-suited to it.
Overnight Camping
Overnight desert camp stays near Riyadh are available from approximately SAR 300 per person (basic) to SAR 700+ per person (luxury glamping with furnished tents). Most operators require a minimum group of 4 for overnight experiences.
Practical Information
Season: October–March is comfortable for full-evening and overnight safaris. April and May are warm but manageable for evening departures. June–September: heat is extreme — most operators don’t run overnight camps and afternoon departures are uncomfortable. If visiting in summer, opt for a sunrise/early morning departure (5–7am before the heat builds).
What to wear: Loose, lightweight clothing for warmth in the evening — desert nights cool quickly after sunset even in the shoulder season. A windproof layer for overnight stays.
Photography: The golden hour before sunset is the best time for dune photography in the Red Sand area. Premium operators time their tours to hit the dunes in this window.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Where do Riyadh desert safaris take place?
- Most Riyadh desert safaris operate in the Red Sand area (Al-Rimal Al-Hamra) approximately 45–60km east of the city, or in the desert near Al-Kharj, 80km southeast of Riyadh. Both areas offer accessible red dunes for bashing and camping. The Red Sand area is the most popular — closer to the city, well-served by operators, and visually dramatic with its reddish-orange dunes.
- Is dune bashing safe?
- Dune bashing in a well-maintained 4WD operated by an experienced driver is generally safe. Risks come from poorly maintained vehicles, overloading, and insufficient tyre deflation. Reputable operators use trained drivers, properly deflated tyres, and travel in convoys. Wear your seatbelt. If an operator's vehicle looks poorly maintained or the driver seems inexperienced, ask to switch or cancel.
- What is included in a Riyadh desert safari?
- It depends on the tier. Budget packages (SAR 150–200) typically cover return 4WD transport, dune driving, and tea/coffee. Mid-range packages (SAR 250–350) add a camel ride, BBQ dinner, and traditional music. Premium packages (SAR 500+) include private transport, a luxury Bedouin-style dining setup, professional entertainment, and sometimes an overnight stay in a furnished desert camp.
- Can I camp overnight in the desert near Riyadh?
- Yes. Several operators run overnight camp experiences in the Red Sand area and Al-Kharj desert. Basic overnight camps (sleeping bags, open fire, simple breakfast) start from approximately SAR 300 per person. Luxury glamping — furnished tents with proper beds, electricity, and catered meals — starts from SAR 700–900 per person as of 2026.
